It's a very versatile recipe since you can skip the step of adding whole orange slices and simply make the cake. It´s prepared in a short time and you don't need many ingredients. With this step-by-step recipe you will see how simple it is and how successful it will be.

This Upside Down Orange Cake came from having a lot of oranges at home, I would have to drink liters and liters of orange juice to be able to finish them. The result of this cake surprised us all, which is why I am sharing it with you and I hope you have the same success with it as mine has had.

Ingredients you need to make a Fluffy Orange Cake

This cake is ideal for people who are intolerant or allergic to dairy products since it doesn't have any dairy products. Below I share the ingredients you need to make an Easy Fluffy Orange Cake.

To make the Sponge Cake you need:

  • Flour: you need 300 grams of all-purpose flour
  • Natural orange juice: To have an optimal result and enjoy a better flavor, use 150 milliliters of natural orange juice
  • Sunflower oil: you will need 150 grams of sunflower oil, you can use olive oil if you prefer, this way the cake will be healthier
  • White sugar: use 200 grams of white sugar to sweeten the cake
  • Eggs: use 4 eggs size L
  • Baking powder: you need a bag of baking powder (10 grams)
  • Vanilla sugar: one bag of vanilla sugar (8 grams), if you don't have, you can add a few drops of vanilla aroma
  • Salt: a pinch of salt to give it more flavor
  • Margarine: to grease the mold, do it with margarine (of vegetable origin if you prepare it for people who are intolerant or allergic to milk), if you don't have any, you can use oil, for example sunflower oil

Ingredients you need to make oranges in syrup

  • Oranges: in addition to the natural orange juice, you need two oranges to put on top (better said on the bottom since you will put the oranges first and then the cake dough)
  • White sugar: to make the syrup you need 170 grams of white sugar
  • Water: you need 150 milliliters of water to mix with the sugar

Kitchen tools you need to make this recipe

Below I leave you a list of kitchen utensils that I have used to make this recipe:

  • Large bowl: you need a large bowl to mix all the ingredients for the cake dough
  • Hand mixer: to beat the ingredients more easily and get a fluffy dough, use a hand mixer
  • Juicer: use a juicer to extract the juice from the oranges
  • Cutting board and a knife: use a cutting board and knife to cut the oranges
  • Silicone spatula: to avoid leaving any dough left in the bowl, use a silicone spatula to remove all the dough from the bowl.
  • Springform pan: you need a removable spring form to make the Orange Cake of about 26 centimeters
  • Baking paper: you need a piece of baking paper to put it on the base of the spring form
  • Pot: to make the oranges in syrup you need a small pot
  • Measuring glass: to measure the amount of water and juice, it´s advisable to have a measuring glass on hand
  • Kitchen scale: use a kitchen scale to weigh ingredients like flour and sugar

How to make a Fluffy Orange Cake

Making a Fluffy Orange Cake has two parts: one is making the oranges in syrup and the other is making the batter for the cake.

How to make oranges in syrup

Making oranges in syrup is very simple. Wash the oranges very well since they are going to be used with the skin. Cut them into slices and remove the two sides of the edges.

In a small pot add the sugar and water, put it over medium heat and when the sugar has dissolved, add the orange slices. Leave it on medium heat for 15 minutes and turn off the heat.

How to make a Fluffy Orange Cake

In a large bowl add the sugar, vanilla sugar, eggs and a pinch of salt. Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed for 3 minutes. Add the flour, oil, natural orange juice and baking powder. Beat for a few more minutes to mix the ingredients well and obtain a batter with plenty of air.

How to assemble this cake

Preheat the oven to 160º.

Put a piece of baking paper on the base of the spring form, grease it with a little margarine and put only the orange slices on the base, save the syrup to put it on top of the cake once it is baked.

Baking the Orange Cake

Place the cake batter on top of the orange slices. Bake for about 25 minutes at 160º degrees. Keep in mind that each oven can vary a little so it is advisable to poke the cake from time to time with a stick to see if it´s done. If the stick comes out clean you can take it out of the oven.

Carefully remove the edge of the spring form because it will be very hot, place a dish on top of the cake and turn it over. Now you can put the leftover syrup on top of the oranges, if you see that the syrup has hardened a little, heat it for a few seconds so that it becomes liquid again. You want to put all the syrup on the cake, or just paint the orange ones with a brush to give them more shine. Personally, I really like to add all the syrup so that the orange cake absorbs it.

I don't like orange slices in syrup, can I make this recipe skipping the oranges in syrup step?

The good thing about this recipe is that it is very versatile, you can make just the cake without putting the oranges with syrup on top. For example, you can make just the syrup following the steps in the recipe without adding the sliced oranges. In this case, prepare the syrup while the cake is baking and once you take it out of the oven, put the syrup on top to have a spongy cake covered in syrup.
